Bahir Dar and Lake Tana: The Source of the Blue Nile
- Northern Ethiopia, Amhara Region
Description
Bahir Dar, a picturesque city located on the southern shores of Lake Tana, serves as a gateway to the source of the Blue Nile. Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake, is dotted with historic monasteries that date back to the 14th century. A boat trip on Lake Tana offers a serene journey to these ancient monasteries, where travelers can explore their unique architecture and religious art. Just outside Bahir Dar, the Blue Nile Falls—known locally as “Tis Issat,” or “Smoke of Fire”—is one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural sights, particularly during the rainy season when the falls are at their most powerful.
